Kilclooney Dolmen, West Donegal.
£55.00
Handcrafted replica of the beauitful Kilclooney Dolmen whish is situated in Ardara in Windswept Western Donegal. Mystical Ireland at its most mysterious and captivating! I wanted to highlight, once again, one of the lesser known heritage gems that are scattered throughout the rich Irish landscape. My neighbouring County of Donegal is a veritable treasure trove of artefacts and historical remnants, so much of my artistic focus is aimed in that direction. I have a deep interest in Neolithic/megalithic Ireland and hope that these pieces serve to generate interest in the ancient ways and customs of our ancestors. I create each of these pieces at home in the kitchen! Each one is given 100% of my attention and painted and treated as if it was the first.
The beautiful Kilclooney dolmen in West Donegal dates from c.3500 BC. Its impressive capstone measures 13-feet wide, 20-feet long and stands over six feet high. This makes it one of the largest and heaviest examples in Europe weighing in at over 100 tonnes! The massive capstone looks different from every angle and some say it resembles a bird taking to flight, a whale, a dolphin, and even an alligator. The lower end of the capstone is unusually supported by an extra back stone which is believed to have been built into the design to allow extra light to shine into the tomb. There is a court tomb nearby and a smaller dolmen which has partly collapsed. This area of ardara in Donegal is Ireland at its most magical.
